There is an old saying: “You can only take someone as far as you’ve gone.” If that’s not very far in your own healing process, you will have very little to give away. We all have seasons in our lives when we don’t have as much to give. If you are coming off of a dry, busy or hurtful season in your own life, you may hit a wall more quickly when trying to help others if you haven’t worked through your own stuff. But on the other hand, if you are in a healthy and whole place, you will have more to offer than you even realize! God will begin to pull things out of you that you didn’t even know were there to begin giving away to others as you come alongside them in their own healing journey!
It is important to understand what your God-given identity is once you have surrendered your life to Christ. Your identity is now in Him! 2 Corinthians 5: 17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.”
What are the things in your life that have come along to cause you to believe the opposite of who God says that you are? Do you believe that you’re worthy? Do you believe that you’re loved? Do you believe that there’s a great destiny and purpose on your life? If you don’t believe these things, you need to back it up and begin to understand and trust who God’s Word says that you are.
We can talk about the concept of understanding your identity in Christ, but how do we get there? How do we practically begin to learn and experience our identity in Christ? It starts with renewing your mind to the truth of God’s Word.
There are two main ways to get the truth of God’s Word in your heart:
Read the Word: When we regularly immerse ourselves in the truth of the Word through reading of the Word, we can more readily identify a lie when it pops up and replace it with the truth.
Speak the Word: When we SAY the truth of God’s Word out of our mouths it causes something to shift in our hearts and our minds! The more that we speak the truth, the more we begin to believe it. If we speak it morning, noon and night, over and over and over again for a week, or two weeks, or three weeks, or four weeks, we’re going to experience a change. Where we once believed we were unworthy –when we speak “I AM LOVED AND WORTHY” – the truth will begin to take root where the lie once held residence! And before long, we will begin to SEE ourselves as worthy and loved….and then, we will ACT as though we are worthy and loved….and then we will see and TREAT OTHERS as loved and worthy as well. As we put the power of the truth of God’s Word to work in our own lives, it begins to resonate and affect not only us, but those around us as well!
